February is usually referred to as the month of love. That is why, during this month, I am focusing on
LOVE in my writing. We recently posted an article on understanding self awareness.
Besides, we also explored the concept of unconditional love. One of the ways we discussed of cultivating
unconditional love was nurturing self-love. We emphasized that it is impossible to pour from an empty cup
and that before extending unconditional love to others, it is essential to cultivate self-love.
I have been engaging in a 21 day self-love challenge with a group. Each day, we have undertaken
different activities challenging our perception of self-love.
Some participants shared that it was not easy
to love themselves, while others considered it was wake-up call to someone they had long neglected or
seldom paid attention to – SELF! It has been a worthwhile journey.
In this blog, we delve deeper into understanding the self-love concept.
What is SELF-LOVE?
In the world today where external validation is overemphasized, understanding and practicing self-love
has become a crucial aspect of our wellbeing. This is not just a trendy concept as many would perceive it
but a transformative process that can impact every aspect of our lives. Self-love is also not selfish. It’s
from one’s full cup of self-love that one pours out love to others.
SELF-LOVE defined
Self-love goes beyond mere self-care routines. It’s a profound and unconditional acceptance of oneself.
It involves recognizing your worth, embracing your imperfections and cultivating a positive relationship
with your own being. Understanding that you are deserving of love and respect is the foundation of self-
love. This is not pegged on what you have done or failed to do, it’s knowing that you simply deserve it!
How can you cultivate self-love in your life?
Recognize your strengths and weaknesses.
Self-love requires a realistic assessment of who you are. It’s important to celebrate your
strengths and accomplishments, no matter how small, while acknowledging areas that require
growth. Remember, self-love is not about perfection. It’s about embracing your whole self.
Practice self-compassion
Be your number one best friend! Treat yourself with the same kindness and understanding that
you would offer to a friend. It’s important to recognize that we all make mistakes and face
challenges in life. Self-compassion involves acknowledging these moments without judgement.
Be gentle towards yourself during these difficult times, learn from your experiences rather than
dwelling on the perceived failures.
Establish healthy boundaries
A crucial aspect of self-love is learning to say ‘NO’ when necessary. It’s important to establish
healthy boundaries both personally and professionally. This helps to protect your emotional
wellbeing and prevents burnout. You will need to prioritize your needs and recognize that it is
okay to put yourself first whenever it’s necessary.
Invest in self-care
Create time for it
Self-love involves nurturing your holistic wellbeing, i.e. physical, spiritual, emotional and mental.
Establish a self-care routine that aligns with your needs and preferences. You have a wide range
of activities to choose from. Whether it’s exercising, nature walks, practicing mindfulness,
journaling, meditation or engaging in hobbies, make time for activities that bring you joy and
relaxation.
Challenge negative self-talk
What do you say to yourself?
Are you conscious of your inner dialogue?
Awareness will help
you intentionally replace self-critical thoughts with positive affirmations and constructive inner
dialogue. Challenge the beliefs that undermine your self-worth and focus on building mindset
that supports and uplifts your self-love journey.
Surround yourself with positivity
It has been said that we are the sum total of the five people we spend most of our time with.
Evaluate the relationships in your life and surround yourself with people who support and uplift
your energy. It’s important for you to distance yourself from those who bring negativity and
toxicity in your life. Creating a positive and supportive environment is essential in your journey
of cultivating self-love.
Practice self-respect
Most people find it easy to violate the promises they make to themselves than those they make
to others. It is important to honor and hold yourself in high esteem. Keeping promises to
yourself elevates your self-worth and influences your perception of who you are. You have
recognize your worth and set high standards of how you want to be treated, not settling for less.
You must treat yourself with the same level of respect that you would expect from others.
Avoid unhealthy competition and comparison
It is important to realize that you are unique and special. You are running a personal race in life
with a special divine destiny. Other people’s progress should challenge you to take necessary
steps towards self-improvement but not cause you to despise and diminish yourself. Focus on
your personal growth and channel your energy into becoming the best version of yourself.
Celebrate your achievements
Normalize celebrating yourself! Recognizing your achievements reinforces a positive self-image.
These may range from reaching personal goals or overcoming challenges. Your brain will
appreciate the realization of the winner in you.
Practicing mirror work
This is my most favorite. I regard it as very foundational. There are people who find it difficult to
look at themselves in their mirrors! As minor as this practice may sound, it is a great way of
connecting to self and enhancing deep self-love. Try this too and you will love the results. I will
delve deeper into this in my next blog.
Seek professional help
Acknowledging that you need assistance is a powerful act of self-love. Whenever you feel stuck
in life, professionals will offer tools and strategies to navigate through challenges. This shortens
your learning curve and alleviates unnecessary suffering.
Unfortunately, even though most
people recognize their need for professional help, they procrastinate it until it’s almost too late.
Challenge yourself, love yourself and seek help. Remember, you are a decision away from you
best life!
